This extensive renovation to an existing commercial property in Bel Air, Maryland, earned VDC a 2006 Award of Excellence honor in the category of Outstanding Commercial Remodel from the Home Builders Association of Maryland. Located at 514 South Main Street, the existing two-story, two-tenant building, was plagued with years of deferred maintenance but had the prospect of being a grander building. The exterior left much to be desired with its crumbling brick and drab stucco walls. In 2005, an investor bought the property and sought to work with VDC in order to expand the space and improve its appearance. The team determined that an existing garage structure would be razed to provide more parking and a 30x60 two-story separate structure would be added to the rear of the existing building. VDC also faced the challenge that the project complement the surrounding architecture and meet the requirements of the Town of Bel Air.
The resulting building expanded the property by 100% and is a striking combination of historic charm and modern amenities. VDC joined the two structures with an attractive brick entryway that seamlessly blends the two structures, and updated all mechanical, heating, and cooling systems while also meeting fire codes. VDC also updated the exterior of the older building, using two kinds of siding, a Dutch-lap siding and a new vinyl shaker panel providing a historically accurate blend of materials. The existing building also received new windows. Construction was conducted efficiently so as not to disturb the existing site and the unified structure is a beautiful re-make to the original fabric of the Town of Bel Air.
