Stevenson Road Project
This 4,400 square foot Williamsburg-style house was completed in December 2001.
The exterior of the home is brick and features an open-style front porch with five columns across the front. Two brick bastions border the steps leading to the home. The front porch has true tongue and groove three inch fir flooring, an authentic southern detail. It has a standing seam roof with five dormers on front and five in back. Three French doors line the front of the home to provide a traditional, but airy look. The exterior of the house is a combination of restoration soffit that provides a colonial wainscoting look. The siding is James Hardi-Plank and is made from recycled wood fiber and Portland cement. The environmentally friendly siding requires very little maintenance and comes pre-stained from the factory with a ten-year warranty. It will be dark gray in color. The Pozzi cottage-style windows provide semi-true divided light for a more traditional, authentic look with new windows. They are white as is all the exterior trim.
The interior of the home was designed to accommodate a family with two teenagers while allowing for changes as the teenagers move away from home. The second floor contains living space for the teenagers - two bedrooms and two full baths along with a study. While the first floor is heated by gas, a heat pump was installed in the second floor and enables the homeowners to shut off that heating system when their children are away.
The first floor, or main living area, features an open floor plan. It contains a master bedroom and master bath. The master suite opens onto a generous deck that overlooks the surrounding woods. The expansive living room is 30 feet wide, approximately half the depth of the home, and has a beautiful fireplace and three-course crown molding and three inch window and door casings for more of a custom look. The kitchen has an open floor plan, a triple six-foot wide casement window over the sink, a cozy sitting area overlooking the wooded lot, and full wood construction KraftMaid cabinets. The half bath and mudroom entry feature random width slate. The flooring on the remainder of the first floor is random width hardwood.
The basement level has a finished, 20 x 30 foot office area with nine-foot ceilings. In addition, VDC walled off three areas for storage and one area for a future wine cellar.
The plans were developed by Walter Schmu Architects in Baltimore, Maryland. Van Deusen Construction Company then adapted those plans to suit the family's budget.
