Accessible Colonial
This colonial-style addition in Monkton incorporates the elements of Universal Design as well as aesthetic appeal that easily blends the new features with the old.
The homeowner, having been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, was seeking a more accessible space for her and her husband. They hoped to move the master suite from the second floor to the first, in anticipation of decreasing mobility factors. The challenge was to create an addition that would serve her needs as her condition changed without making the addition scream that it was 'handicap accessible.'
The homeowners were hoping for an addition that 'fit' the rest of the house and all Universal Design modifications had to work for the husband as well. Honoring the existing layout of the first floor; the family enjoyed the working floor plan of the house, and did not want to move doors and windows around in fitting the new first floor suite to the home.
The result is a beautiful New England-style addition that mimics the existing garage side of the house. Several new Andersen windows were installed for even, natural light throughout the master suite and closets were specially designed for wheelchair accessibility. The roomy master bathroom incorporates a rimless shower and toilet that includes every modern convenience and will also provide for greater accessibility in the future.
